My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and now I am a writer who has
published three books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini, and My Taiwan, Seoul
and Guadalajara (Mexico) Memoirs by Daniel Nardini.
The Constitutional Court's ruling on the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye
does not surprise me. I suspected the impeachment would be upheld. I for one cannot explain how the court
could make such a ruling when they never touched former President Kim Daejung's scandal of providing cash
for North Korea hosting unification summits back in 2000 where the evidence was solid and clear and the evidence against Park is at best circumstantial. But then, I live in one universe and the Constitutional
Court lives in another. What I urge all who believe in freedom and a capitalist democracy to try and rally behind a candidate who believes in the same. The political left may have won this round, but the fight is far from over. The advantage is now on the side of the political left and the pro-China and pro-North Korea forces, but the fight goes on. Even if the political left wins the presidential election and they control the presidency as well as the National Assembly, the fight goes on. The political left, once they get into total power over all institutions in South Korea, will probably make sure that they are never driven from power. No matter what they do, the fight must go on. There is too much at stake. The freedom of all we hold dear is at stake. Will the political left value any political opposition the right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of peaceful assembly, and the right to vote for whom we wish and to petition for grievances if and when they are in power? Will aligning with China and by default with North Korea be in the best interests for South Korea? I doubt it. As we have seen already China has forced the Philippines to make concessions over its territorial waters, and even some of its islands. Worse, China has forced the Philippine government to limit the freedoms of the Philippine people if they dare to criticize China. China has territorial ambitions for Korean land and Korean territorial waters. Will China respect South Korea's sovereignty? Will the Chinese government respect the freedoms that South Koreans enjoy now? South Korea's freedoms, standard of living, and very identity are at stake, for all
of our sake, we must all continue the fight!
